Quick but strong summer storm causes widespread outages

A quick, but strong summer storm hit our service area yesterday evening around 6:30 PM. Heavy wind, rain and lightning caused downed trees and power lines. Pickens Street in Nelson experienced outages due to a downed tree 50 feet outside of our right of way. Two broken crossarms underneath the transmission line caused a recloser to catch on fire. A broken pole was discovered on Darby Road in the Clayton/Waleska area, as well as the Hidden Hollow area of Dahlonega. In multiple areas we had several spans of wire down that had to be put back up. Rail Hill and Halls Mill Road in Dahlonega were hit with a very large tree that fell onto the power lines. Flatbottom Road in Ball Ground had one tree on the power line, with repairs needed to the power pole, and several spans of wire down on the ground.

Our crews have worked through the night and will continue their efforts today to restore all power as quickly as safely possible. We appreciate the patience and understanding of our members who have been affected by these outages. We were down roughly 6,300 meters last night at the peak, and as of 11:00 AM we have around 190 still out.

As a reminder, to report a power outage please call one of the following numbers: 706-253-0359 OR 706-276-0359 OR 706-864-0359

Please always practice extreme caution if you encounter a downed power line. Always assume it is energized, and do not go near it or drive over it. Stay back to stay safe!
