Generator Safety

Generator Safety

Generators—both standby and portable—are invaluable during power outages or when you need portable power. However, it's essential to prioritize safety when using them. Whenever a generator is in operation, whether connected to your fuse/breaker box or directly at the meter, a double-throw switch is legally required. This switch prevents electricity from backfeeding into power lines, protecting linemen who are working to restore service and safeguarding your generator.

According to Georgia law and the National Electric Code (Article 702-6), a double-throw switch is mandatory for safe operation. To ensure your generator and switch are properly installed, it is advisable to work with an authorized generator dealer or a qualified electrician. Additionally, please notify Amicalola EMC when you install a standby generator.
