Slam the Scam Day

Posted on

Today is #SlamtheScam Day. While we hope you have not been the victim of a scam, we know that scammers on the rise and utility customers are a target. Here are a few tips to keep in mind to keep yourself safe from scammers.

  • PAST DUE SCAM: If you get a call from someone claiming to be from Amicalola EMC demanding an immediate payment to avoid disconnection, please hang up and contact the Amicalola EMC office. These scammers will sometimes spoof the Amicalola EMC phone number so it will appear the EMC is calling you on your caller ID. While we do notify members they have a payment due via phone, text and email, we will never demand an immediate payment via phone. Payments can only be made online, in our office or through our automated phone payment system.

  • UTILITY WORKER SCAM: Someone may claim to be at your home to work on utility-related equipment. If Amicalola EMC employees or authorized contractors need to access your property, you will be notified in advance with time to confirm the appointment. In addition, Amicalola EMC employees will be dressed in a uniform with our logo and have proper employee identification.

  • NATURAL DISASTER SCAMS: Scammers are quick to target vulnerable individuals in areas following a natural disaster, like a hurricane. If someone is offering quick repairs in your area after a storm, be sure to ask to see a business license and never offer payment up front.
